The Best Little Dance Hall in Texas
THE CADILLAC at Dos Conchas Ranch is at the north edge of Marble Falls just down the road from the old Fairland community where many of the ranch’s original founders rest in peace in the family cemetery. The ruggedly majestic hill country ranch land with its panoramic views and frontier history in Backbone Valley was settled by the Edwards family circa 1800’s pre-civil war. A 500 acre tract of the ranch still remained in their family until 2005 when local attorney Eddie Shell and his physician son, Dr. Eddie Shell, purchased the land which adjoins Eddie and wife Dale’s homestead ranch.
“Build it and they will come.” It was late Summer 2010 when Eddie acted upon his dream to create a welcoming, comfortable place where history feels at home and where folks can gather in a country setting to enjoy the live music and memorabilia that he and other generations of Texans grew up on. During the four years prior, Eddie had been steadily building a well-seasoned band comprised of artists with diverse yet complementary talents. This motley crew of musicians would practice every week in his and Dale’s barn before an encouraging crowd of supportive friends and family. Eddie called these gatherings “Over the Hump Wednesdays” and they included a potluck supper and plenty of genuine camaraderie that helped everyone unwind and connect regularly to share their stories and home-cooking. As word spread, friends brought friends, and a steady stream of talented artists, some famous, were dropping in for jam sessions with this melting pot of savvy musicians known by now as ‘”Eddie Shell & the Not Guilties” with Bode Barker and Friends.’ The rest is history and The Cadillac came aLIVE on the music radar.
The dance hall was created inside the original livestock barn and, due to the overwhelming initial response and the continually growing interest, it has seen several expansions in the short period since opening its doors. One of the most recent additions is the Cadillac “Grille” which is now cookin’ up a $5 blue plate special every 2nd Wednesday during the live radio show and, on the last Saturday of every month, a juicy 14 oz. “Cadillac Stallion” sirloin steak with grilled onions and potatoes for $12. And don’t let the prices fool you! As far as quality vs bargain goes, both are served up on the same plate! By now, it’s likely you’ve figured out that Eddie loves company, and he aims to treat his supper guests well!
Another recent addition, the newly-covered expansive front porch, is an “open” invitation for guests to relax outdoors and enjoy a chat or meal. Whether it’s rainin’, hailin’ or blazin’ outside, you’re covered! And, finally, the last surprise that Eddie recently WOWED guests with is the Texas-size corner fireplace that now greets you in the large front courtyard. Since the inside fireplace has been a favorite for guests to cozy up to, providing that same pleasure outside just seemed like an “ought to.” It keeps folks toasty on clear cold nights when they’ve stepped outside to converse and marvel at the valley’s huge celestial sky of twinklin’ stars.
